Roughly 50 cars have been covered with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.
Cars, exterior walls and mailboxes were vandalized, occasionally with swastikas, they reported in a statement.
Law enforcement report they were contacted late on Wednesday evening, when a man discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish liquid.
The liquid had been applied in the form of a swastika, they reported.
Police then located multiple other smeared vehicles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under laws outlawing the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police report preliminary tests show the liquid was likely human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no lead as to its source; investigators are currently not cognizant of any physical harm in connection with the occurrence," they added.
Municipal representatives announced they were trying "to resolve the incident" and have asked to the public for tips.
A senior official said the incident left him without words and had to be resolved rapidly.
"This incident hits the core of Hanau and reopens the pain of the extremist violent incident half a decade ago," he stated on online, mentioning the killing of nine victims by a gunman focusing on individuals of immigrant origin in 2020.
