Matteo Cancellieri Demonstrates Flashing Moments of Genius in Bright Spot for Unstable Lazio

The feeling at the Stadio Olimpico was decidedly gloomy during the weekend fixture. The home side was losing against Torino, an opponent that had let in ten goals while managing only two goals in their most recent five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were finishing their ongoing dissent in a continuous dispute with club owner Claudio Lotito.

A Season Coming Unstitched?

Was the team's progress coming unstitched, or was there ever any cohesion keeping it intact to start with? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as manager this summer, before he to later acknowledge that the club had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for accounting issues. Reports that his departure was imminent were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Roman club appeared equally disorganized on the pitch as behind the scenes, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the rest of their initial five matches, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to tell if they're getting better or collapsing.

Matteo's Unforeseen Return

At least one man continued to smile amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to feature for Lazio this season. He completed last season with Parma on loan and, early this summer, his owning club were pushing for him to remain there a while longer. The transfer ban led to a change of plans. Lazio could not afford to reduce their roster with no new signings.

Cancellieri arrived originally under Sarri's first spell, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He made 20 Serie A appearances with the club in that campaign, all but one of those as a substitute. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended after that campaign, subsequently claimed Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri would be a star then never playing him."

Discovering His Natural Fit

It's possible the coach was continuing to attempt to work out the exact type of Cancellieri's abilities. Labeled as a flank player upon signing, Cancellieri instead found himself most of that campaign as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile as center forward. In 63 appearances while playing for Empoli and Parma in the past two years, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
